Trustee (non-remunerated)

Leonard Cheshire Disability
Northern Ireland

‘Individuals change the world’: Leonard Cheshire.

Leonard Cheshire’s drive and ambition helped to improve the lives of disabled people in the UK and across the world. His vision led to the establishment of Leonard Cheshire Disability in 1948. Indeed, HM the Queen described Leonard Cheshire as ‘a shining example of what a human being can achieve in a lifetime of dedication’.

In 2017 – the centenary of his birth – Leonard Cheshire Disability is the UK’s largest voluntary sector provider of services for disabled people. These services include high-quality care and community support, together with innovative projects supporting disabled people into education, employment and entrepreneurship.

Worldwide, our global alliance of Cheshire partners also supports disabled people into education and employment, and works in more than 50 countries. Our new strategy will deliver a seismic change to our work in the UK. We are building on our heritage of social care services and expanding our activities to become more community-centric, with our core principle of supporting the integration of people in communities, whether disabled or not.

We are now seeking a Trustee based in Northern Ireland to represent us in the region. You will be joining a strong and committed Trustee Board, will believe in and support our work, and be a trusted adviser and ambassador who contributes their skills to changing people’s lives through a thriving charity in a developing landscape.

In addition to the highest calibre of non-executive skills, you will have a meaningful experience of life with disability – whether personally, through family or friends, or as a professional. You’ll ideally bring an extensive understanding of the care framework policies and networks in Northern Ireland. As well as a sophisticated grasp of how organisations can continually improve, both strategically and operationally, you will understand how to work positively and collaboratively with a high-performing executive team, and be able to commit the requisite time (around 10 days per annum).

If you are inspired by Leonard Cheshire’s legacy, and excited by our new strategy, then we look forward to receiving your application.
