Join the BBC's Nations teams in either Business Operations and Change or Music, Arts and Events for a 8-week internship to learn or enhance production skills and be involved in making high impact content.
BBC Northern Ireland produces programmes for NI, UK and global audiences. Around 86% of the Northern Ireland population come to the BBC each week for TV, radio or online content. 45% of the NI adult population tune into BBC Newsline each week the highest local BBC news reach of the 4 nations.
In addition there are around 2 million weekly visitors to BBC News NI Online. Radio Ulster/Foyle remains one of the BBC’s most successful local radio stations reaching almost a third of the local adult population and accounting for a nearly one fifth of all radio listening in Northern Ireland.
Your role
Key responsibilities are as follows:
- Work on a single placement within BBC Business Operations and Change or in Music, Arts and Events.
- Gain insights into the work of the departments and the varying functions.
- Build relationships with internal and external partners and support innovative content production.
- Contribute to productions, high quality output, and creativity.

Business Operations & Change:
At Business Operations and Change, we connect with millions of people each week through our TV, Radio, Online and Social Media services. The department includes all staff who are providing essential and important work behind the camera. We produce news programmes and TV/Radio output. You’ll undertake a placement in our exciting studios and editing suites working with our creative, multi-skilled operations team.
Each placement will vary, but it’s likely you’ll experience/learn about the following skill sets:
- Video editing
- Media management/post production
- Shoot/edit location newsgathering
- TV/radio sound operations
- Technical directing/vision mixing
- Studio camera operation
You’ll learn about the technical production roles and career pathways on offer at BBC Northern Ireland. We’ll also do our best to connect you with other departments within the wider BBC during your time with us to maximise your experience and networks.
Music, Arts & Events (TV, Radio, Sounds, Digital)
Our unit covers a wide range of output from our core daily radio programmes such as Vinny & Cate, Connor Phillips, Anne Marie- Wallace to name a few. We also lead on BBC Radio Ulster events from Children in Need to summer festival coverage. This is a dynamic, multi-platform area.
The Station Management part of the team is responsible for ensuring these and pretty much all of the other non-News programmes reach our listeners and the stations stay on air and continue to provide BBC services for audiences no matter what the challenges whether you’re listening live on your radio or smart device or catching up later on BBC Sounds. They’re the glue that weaves the various programmes together across the Radio Ulster/Foyle schedule, operate the studios so they can be recorded or played out and, with the phone team, ensure anyone can contact us to tell us what they think or even have their say directly on air.
We also play a part in ensuring that the great output that’s created across the Content department is highlighted, shared and promoted so that as many people as possible get to know about and hear it.
