This is an exciting opportunity to join our Speech and Language Therapy-led Communication Support team in Northern Ireland.  We’re looking for an enthusiastic, creative, and committed individual with excellent communication and organisational skills to join our Communication Support Service based in the WHSCT area.

This post is ideal for someone with an interest in offering person-centred support to people with communication difficulties post-stroke within a community and social setting. We support stroke survivors and their families to develop new and creative ways of communicating when language skills have been impacted. Support is delivered one to one, in home and social settings, and through the delivery of our 8-week Communication Plus Programme. You will be responsible for training Stroke Association volunteers to support you in delivering the service.

This role requires an individual who is innovative, passionate and professional when working within the Stroke Association.  You will also need to have good time management skills, be able to work independently as well as within the team, and work closely with the SLT manager and senior management team.

Key responsibilities will include:

  1. Working with stroke survivors and their families to identify communication needs and goals, visiting people at home and in community settings, to support the delivery of our Communication Support programmes
  2. Delivering a structured 8-week communication programme to stroke survivors living with aphasia/a communication difficulty as the result of stroke, based on a total communication approach.
  3. Building relationships with external agencies, both statutory and community, to drive referrals to our services.
  4. Acting as an ambassador for the Stroke Association with the aim of creating awareness of stroke and aphasia / communication difficulty post stroke.

This role is home-based within the Western Trust area and we have a very flexible approach to how the contracted hours are worked, so long as it meets the needs of stroke survivors and the delivery of group programmes. Frequent travel will be required, and candidates must be able to demonstrate how they can meet this requirement of the role.
