The post is based at TCV’s office in Coleraine, where resources include an office, workshop, vehicles and an extensive range of tools and equipment. The Project Officer will organise volunteering activities throughout Counties Antrim and East Londonderry.

Every day TCV works across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone - communities where our activities have a lasting impact on people's health, prospects and outdoor places.

About the role:

The post is based at TCV’s office in Coleraine, where resources include an office, workshop, vehicles and an extensive range of tools and equipment. The Project Officer will organise volunteering activities throughout Counties Antrim and East Londonderry. Projects run from TCV’s Coleraine office include:

  • Development of school grounds for education and biodiversity
  • Community projects improving housing estates and urban open spaces
  • Tree and hedges planting projects
  • Management of sand dunes and costal habitats
  • Management of woodlands and removal of invasive species

Around half the week will be spent on habitat management work to manage eight nature reserve sites, including upland, woodland and sand dune sits. All eight sites hold one and sometimes several statutory designations, including National Nature Reserve, Area of Special Scientific Interest, and Special Area of Conservation status.

The post holder’s role will include:

  1. Leading volunteers undertaking practical environmental projects such as tree planting, pond construction, woodland management, control of invasive species, path construction and hedgelaying.
  2. Leading volunteers undertaking horticultural and community projects such as food growing, garden creation, management and improvements to community sites and urban open spaces.
  3. Running Green Gym sessions for people who have health issues or want to become more active.
  4. Providing on-the-job training and work experience for unemployed people.
  5. Helping to recruit volunteers to become involved in TCV’s projects.

The post is a permanent role for 28 hours per week. In a typical week the Project Officer will spend 4 days running practical projects and working with volunteers.

Experience required:

Applicants should have experience of practical environmental work or horticulture. The Project Officer’s main role is leading volunteers undertaking a wide range of practical environmental work and they need sufficient skills to show the volunteers how to do the work safely and to a good standard.

Some experience and understanding of working with volunteers, community involvement and the charity/NGO sector is also important.

There are no specific qualifications required, but a qualification in horticulture or environment such as NVQ or HND is helpful. Certificates of competence in using equipment such as bushcutters, lawnmowers or safe use of pesticides, are also very useful.

A full driving licence (for a manual transmission vehicle) is essential, (which has been held for a minimum of one year), as the post holder has use of company vehicles.

A bit more about us:
We recognise that each community and the people living there have different needs. Whether improving wellbeing, conserving a well-loved outdoor space or bringing people together to promote social cohesion and combat loneliness, TCV works together with communities to deliver practical solutions to the real life challenges they face.

For over 50 years we have adapted our work with volunteers to reflect the changing needs of communities in the UK and, by giving people a sense of purpose and belonging, we have empowered them to take control of their lives and outdoor spaces for the benefit of all.

Whilst our activities vary, our inclusive approach has remained consistent; bringing people and places together to create happy, healthy and connected communities for everyone.
