Virtual carers information and support programme

Cost: The programme is funded by the Belfast Health and Social care trust and is free for carers.
Are you supporting someone with dementia and would be interested in a 4 week training programme? The sessions explain more about dementia, how it affects communication, financial and legal matters as well as how to get more support. The programme currently runs virtually with morning, afternoon, evening and half day options available. The programme is as follows:

1. Understanding dementia: the physical, psychological & emotional implications that Dementia may have on the person with dementia.

The session aims

· to help participants understand what dementia is

· to help participants understand more about the experience of living with dementia

· to help participants understand some of the problems and difficulties that affect

someone living with dementia.

2. Providing support and care

Practical support strategies to address issues that may arise for a person with dementia

The session aims to help participants:

· to help carers look at practical ways of supporting someone experiencing problems

associated with dementia

· to help carers look at what else can cause problems for people living with dementia

· to explain ways of communicating better with people living with dementia

· to provide information about local services and available support.

3. Legal and money matters : legal and financial issues, welfare benefits and entitlements

The session aims

· to help carers understand about the importance of planning for the future

· to explain how decisions can be made when someone no longer has the mental

capacity to make them for themselves

· to provide information about the welfare benefits that carers and people living with

dementia might be able to claim

· to provide information about sources of help for those needing further information

and help about these financial and legal issues

4. Coping day to day & next steps : The physical, psychological & emotional implications that dementia may have on the carer, including their relationships, how to look after themselves and identification of relevant support and services

The session aims to help participants:

· recognise how dementia impacts on everyday lives and relationships

· recognise the importance of looking after themselves

· identify sources of help and support.

· plan next steps.
