Adult training WomenOne Small Thing’s vision is a justice system that can recognise, understand, and respond to trauma. Our mission is to redesign the justice system for women and their children, which has led us to open our residential community Hope Street. We also facilitate trauma-informed and gender-responsive programmes for the justice and community sectors.
Our name reflects the value of small acts – empathy, compassion, respect – and their combined power to make a big difference to the individual - and to society as a whole.
Trauma-Informed Training and Consultancy
As part of our work, we train staff and volunteers in organisations to develop an understanding of the dynamics and process of trauma, to inform practice and system change. Our training courses and workshops have three primary objectives:
-
To help staff to better understand the effects of violence, abuse, and trauma on those they work with.
-
To provide opportunities for skill enhancement in trauma informed practice.
-
To give staff the opportunity to reflect and learn more about themselves.
In 2023-24 we trained over 590 participants in trauma-informed practice in the justice and community sectors.

Working with Trauma Quality Mark.
We also have the Working with Trauma Quality Mark. The Working with Trauma Quality Mark is a set of best practice standards in trauma-informed working. It is a practical and accessible tool to help organisations review, develop and evidence trauma-informed practice throughout their organisation.
The Working with Trauma Quality Mark recognises organisations who can evidence they meet a robust, accessible, and supportive set of standards for working with trauma. It has been developed in partnership with Dr Alexandria Bradley from Leeds Beckett University and peer reviewed by critical friends at The Nelson Trust and Tina Vink from Together Women. It has been developed through an extensive analysis of existing global standards, principles, and values associated with trauma informed working practices.
Bronze: Trauma Aware. An understanding and awareness of trauma and its impact and organisational plans in place ready to implement trauma informed practice.
Silver: Trauma Informed. Trauma informed working is implemented across the culture, practice and environment of the organisation and individual needs and well-being are prioritised.
Gold: Trauma Responsive. Extensive and embedded trauma informed working practices. It prioritises user voice in strategic decision-making and is a centre of excellence
