Technology in lockdown- How AbilityNetNI has helped change lives for many

Technology plays a vital role in keeping people connected as Covid-19 keeps us apart and it’s led to a record year for AbilityNetNI’s FREE tech help who have helped 6,878 individuals, which is 27% more than the previous year.

David Brew, a volunteer for AbilityNetNI recently helped an 80-year-old lady ‘Pauline’ from Belfast, connect with her family with the use of tech.

Pauline always looked forward to her weekly social events within the community and due to Covid-19, everything was brought to a standstill. Pauline said “Being socially active was something that I really enjoyed and with the pandemic it really hit me hard as I found myself feeling very lonely with no one to talk to for days.”

AbilityNetNI offers FREE technology support and advice to the older and disabled. “When I heard about AbilityNetNI and the FREE technology services that they offered, I immediately thought this is just what I need to get my social life back” Pauline said.

“Thanks to David, I can now zoom call my sister overseas, video call my grandchildren and do some shopping online. It’s amazing to know this technology is accessible to the older generation, especially now when we need it the most.” Says Pauline

David Brew from AbilityNetNI responded by saying “It is so heart-warming to see so many clients learning new tech skills so they can stay in touch with their loved ones when isolation is high and it is amazing that families are all coming together and staying connected where possible.”
