Small businesses could save £1,000 on postal redirection charges

The Consumer Council is calling for small businesses getting their mail redirected during COVID-19 to check they are getting a new cheaper rate, saving up to £1,000.

As a result of the high redirection costs for business during the COVID-19 lockdown, Royal Mail has introduced a new small business diversion rate following intervention from The Consumer Council.

Kellin McCloskey, Head of Postal Services at The Consumer Council, said: “Many small businesses in multi-occupancy buildings have redirected their mail to an alternative address due to staff working from home as a result of COVID-19 or relocating their premises. Concerned about the additional costs for small businesses, we raised the issue with Royal Mail who has introduced a new cheaper small business rate.

“We would call on businesses with less than 50 employees who are usually based in multi-occupancy buildings to avail of this lower rate. Eligible businesses can save almost £1,000 for a three month service on their mail diversion costs.  Businesses should contact Royal Mail directly to ensure they are on the lower rate.”

The Consumer Council has produced further advice for businesses on their COVID-19 webpage, available from www.consumercouncil.org.uk/coronavirus
