Shop around for the best electricity deal

On the back of SSE Airtricity’s announcement today that it is set to reduce its domestic electricity prices by 5.1% from 1 August 2020, The Consumer Council would encourage consumers to shop around for the best energy deal.

In the year to 31 March 2020, nearly 150,000 consumer in Northern Ireland used The Consumer Council’s energy switching tools to shop around for the best deal.

Paulino Garcia, Head of Energy at The Consumer Council, said: “We welcome the tariff decrease announced today by SSE Airtricity. However, it is important that all consumers on an annual basis actively shop around to get the best deal possible. Even if you want to stay with your current supplier, it is always worth contacting them to see if you are on the best deal as there can be up to a 25% difference between a company’s standard tariff and the lower tariff they provide to new customers.”

Paulino added, “Our free independent price comparison tool is on our website and it compares all tariffs currently available from the five suppliers in Northern Ireland. If you do not have access to the internet, or you just want to talk through the process, please contact us on 0800 121 6022. Last year, nearly 150,000 domestic and business consumers used the energy switching tools on The Consumer Council’s website to get the best possible deal”.

The Consumer Council has additional consumer support information in relation to the COVID-19 crisis on its website www.consumercouncil.org.uk/coronavirus which covers a range of topics including home energy, travel, shopping, personal finances and much more.
