NEXUS NI is auctioning unique pieces of art by local artists who have donated their paintings to help support survivors of sexual trauma.

For over 30 years, NEXUS NI has been offering counselling and support to those affected by sexual trauma and the charity is running an online art auction with some notable pieces of art up for grabs.

Works currently up for auction include an acrylic painting on canvas of the Dark Hedges by Deborah Anderson. Deborah came to art later in life and loves working with colour and light. In a previous life, Deborah was a nursery teacher and believed in encouraging children’s creativity. Now she is discovering her own. Deborah’s piece, Autumn Light starts bidding at £50.

Pink Hydrangeas is a work by north Belfast amateur artist Mary Bailie. The funds raised by the 10” x 12” acrylic on canvas work hopes to support the work of NEXUS NI across Northern Ireland. Mary said, ‘With the NHS currently stretched, it is important women and amen can access counselling support when they find themselves in complete crisis. We need charities that can advocate the importance of breaking the silence on sexual violence as well as offering a wraparound support to victims.’ Starting bids commence at £25.

Meanwhile, Hayley Wylie Thurrat’s oil-based painting of Lady Dixon Park will be attracting bids from £110. The Lisburn based artist takes her inspiration from shape form and colour that is endless in our landscape.

Brenda Kelly, CEO at NEXUS NI said, ‘We had to come up with new innovative ways to raise funds and so we set about hosting our own online art auction to sell, initially, a couple of pieces. Through our network and the power of social media, gradually more artists stepped forward to provide additional artworks for the auction and our staff have worked tirelessly to bring this fundraising concept to life.

‘We’ve had an incredible response from local artists donating their amazing works to help us continue our work. Although our physical doors may be closed, our services remain open supporting vulnerable clients at a time when they really need us most. The public have been motivated in snapping up beautiful original artworks and in turn helping raise funds when many of our fundraising events had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.’

These pieces of art and many more are available for bidding on NEXUS NI’s Facebook page until 12 Noon on Sunday 2nd August.
