Save the date: launch of public trust and confidence in charities research

New research into public trust and confidence in Northern Ireland’s charities will be launched by the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland next month.

The research, conducted by an independent agency on behalf of the Commission, gathered the views on charities of 1,500 adults. The findings will be unveiled for the first time at a live, online event on Friday morning, 25 June 2021.

Nicole Lappin, Chief Charity Commissioner, commented: “I firmly believe that public trust and confidence is a key part of the success of each and every charity in Northern Ireland, as well as the charity sector as a whole.

“Many charities depend on the goodwill and awareness of their supporters, their funders and the wider public. This research will not only show the levels of public trust and confidence in charities in 2021, but also what influences those levels and how they can be improved.

“I’m looking forward to the launch next month and I very much hope this unique data will inspire some interesting conversations and perhaps spark new ideas and innovations for the future.”

The research will be launched by the Commission via a live, online event on Friday morning 25 June 2021 with further details to be announced soon. Anyone interested in attending the launch is asked to send their name and email address to [email protected] to be added to the booking list*.

A representative sample of the Northern Ireland population, consisting of 1,500 adults, responded to an online survey undertaken as part of the research. Due to restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, no interviews were conducted.

The last time the Commission undertook a major research project into public trust and confidence in charities was in 2016, when it was revealed that almost 80% of people in Northern Ireland had a medium to high level of trust and confidence in charities.

This year’s research was designed so that the results can be benchmarked against the 2016 research and similar surveys conducted by the Charity Commission for England and Wales (CCEW) and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) in 2018.
