The Orchestre des Réfugiés et Amis immersive performance workshop programme starts in Ballymena with concerts this Friday at Out To Lunch Festival Belfast.

Orchestre des Réfugiés et Amis "The 500"

On Monday 16th January (Beyond Skin’s 13th Birthday), The Orchestre des Réfugiés et Amis gave a surprise Immersive Performance Workshop to 500 school children at the Braid Centre Ballymena supported by Mid and East Antrim Council & the Arts Council Northern Ireland.

The large turn-out was very unexpected as the group has shied away from an overwhelming amount of media interest – with only a rare BBC Radio Ulster and Community Relations Week appearance in September by some of the musicians involved.

On the 20th January the group will be performing at the Out To Lunch Festival Belfast 1pm with a additional performance 8pm just announced.

Orchestre des Réfugiés et Amis is an intercultural music project developed by Beyond Skin. The project creates shared welcoming spaces for musicians with Refugee or Asylum status to collaborate, socialise and creatively express their culture with a diversity of professional musicians.

With the Arts Council of Northern Ireland as the principal funder, musicians involved have been writing and rehearsing songs, pushing intercultural music boundaries and raising awareness about Refugees whilst also challenging the theory of Intercultural Arts itself.

With local musician and Refugee support activist Joby Fox at the helm as the music director the Orchestre des Réfugiés et Amis and the group’s visual director Rashid Khaidanov, ODREA has sparked lots of curiosity and is the inspirational sound of Humanity at its best.
