Universal Credit

The Move to UC: Get Ready

Please join us for the launch of our report, The Move to UC: Get Ready, where we will share our findings and recommendations.

Universal Credit (UC) is one of the biggest changes to happen to the social security system in our lifetimes.

Soon, UC will replace Child and Working Tax Credits, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseekers Allowance, and income-related Employment and Support Allowance. Anyone on those benefits will have to move to UC.

At the end of 2022, Advice NI and the independent advice network conducted research where we surveyed advisers and claimants about their concerns and experiences of UC. Based on the survey findings, we identified a range of recommendations directed toward the Department for Communities which is responsible for the move to UC. Our recommendations propose ways to make the move to UC as problem-free as possible for people who will have to claim UC. Our recommendations require feasible changes to departmental processes, not changes to legislation.
