HURT (Have Your Tomorrows) provides support, treatment and education programmes in relation to substance misuse. The ‘Re-Engage with Age’ project is an initiative to support older people aged 60+ years who are at risk of addiction issues across the North

Older People at Risk

Substance misuse in older people is a growing health concern. Research has shown that a significant number of older people consume alcohol at dangerous levels and use prescription and over the counter medication at high rates.

Common factors in old age such as:

  • Bereavement
  • Retirement
  • Boredom
  • Loneliness
  • Depression

are all associated with higher rates of alcohol use. HURT recognise that those older people living in isolation may be at an increased risk of addiction issues.

 

The ‘Re-Engage with Age Project’ includes:

Support and Treatment:

Older people can access HURT assessment and treatment services at the main base, out reach clinics or through home support if required. The programme is comprised of counselling and complimentary therapies to support older people in their recovery of addiction.

Group work Programmes facilitated by HURT and the Community Pharmacist:

For Older People

The ‘Why Pay the Price’ programme provides information on the use of prescription, over the counter products and alcohol; diet and exercise and alternative methods of relaxation.

 

For Carers

Information workshops for carer’s of older people in relation to understanding medicines, safe administration and minimising errors.

Social Activities:

There will be opportunities for social activities and outings for older people involved in the programme.

Safe Disposal:

We will organise community wide safe disposal of unwanted medicines biannually.

 

 

HURT operate an open referral system.
