Marie Curie, the charity for people living with a terminal illness, has partnered with five Belfast Solicitor firms to offer a free will writing service to anyone aged over 55.

From 1st September to 1st December 2016, Cleaver Fulton Rankin, Ferguson & Co, McLernon Moynagh, James Boston & Sullivan and Millar McCall & Wylie Solicitors will be offering the service in the hope that people will be encouraged to consider leaving a legacy (or Gift in their Will) to Marie Curie. The charity provides support for people living with a terminal illness in their own home, in the community or in the charity’s East Belfast Hospice. In 2014/15 the Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast saw over 300 admissions while Marie Curie’s specialist nurses carried out over 3,900 visits in Belfast, supporting families to make the most of the time they have together.

Gifts in Wills play a vital role within the charity as the equivalent of almost a quarter of all people cared for by Marie Curie last year was thanks to gifts left in supporters’ Wills.  There is no more precious gift that you could leave, than enabling people to be with their family and loved ones, at home or wherever they choose during the last stages of their life.

Eimear McCooey, Marie Curie Legacy Advisor said: “Having an up to date Will in place is very important to make sure that your wishes are honored and the ones you love are looked after. People often think that making a Will is a difficult or expensive process however this couldn’t be further from the truth and we hope that by organising this partnership with local solicitors we can remove some of these barriers and help people prepare for the future.

Gifts in Wills are a hugely significant income source to us equating to the care for 1 in 4 of all our patients. Although in using this service there is no obligation to leave a legacy, we hope people will consider doing so to ensure that the legendary work of Marie Curie can continue long into the future for those living with any terminal illness.”
