The Big Lunch is an annual get together for neighbours and it happens on the first Sunday in June every year.

It's a very simple idea started in 2009 by the Eden Project. The aim was to get as many of the 61 million people in the UK as possible to have lunch with their neighbours once a year. The idea grew out of national research showing that people were increasingly feeling isolated from their neighbours and that communities were not developing as they did in the past.

Big Lottery Fund, ASDA, Halifax and B&Q Streetclub support this initiative and help fund a Free Lunch Pack which anyone can order at www.thebiglunch.com. It's packed full of ideas and bits and pieces to get your party started.

What is a Big Lunch?

A Big Lunch can be anything from simply getting together with your immediate neighbours – in a garden, on the street – through to organising a bigger street party, with food, bunting and music, that quite literally stops the traffic. In 2012 Lewisham had 61 big lunch street parties
