COVID-19: How to contact your bank for help or support

The Consumer Council and UK Finance are informing consumers of the different ways to make contact with their banks if they need any help or support due to COVID-19.

John French, Chief Executive at The Consumer Council, said: “We recognise that many people in Northern Ireland will be worried about their finances and will need help from their banks and lenders to make sure they can access their money. Many providers are introducing different forms of help, such as mortgage payment breaks.

“The Consumer Council has worked with UK Finance, and others, to produce a coronavirus information page on its website, which includes information and contact details for many of the financial service providers in Northern Ireland."

Paul Leonard, Non-Executive Chairman of the UK Finance Northern Ireland Committee, said: “Firms have been taking a record volume of calls due to COVID-19 while facing the same pressures on staffing as the rest of the country. Where possible, we would therefore encourage customers to check their lender’s website first to see if it answers their question, and consider getting in touch via online chat, social media and online banking and mobile apps.”

Paul and John added: “We would ask consumers to consider all of the different methods of contacting your bank at what is a busy and challenging time for all concerned.”

The Consumer Council’s coronavirus information page on its website also provides consumers in Northern Ireland with up-to-date advice regarding supermarkets, retailers, energy suppliers, public transport, air and ferry travel, scams and postal services.
