One of Oakfield Glen's crafty creations - a fairy-like sculpture hiding in the treetops

Autumn tales at Oakfield Glen, Carrickfergus

Visitors are invited to come under the spell of the Woodland Trust’s Oakfield Glen in Carrickfergus on the afternoon of Saturday 13 October.

Families can enjoy a breath of fresh air on a guided stroll through this charming woodland.

And the kids are in for a magical treat – the renowned Belfast storyteller Eamonn Keenan will be ready and waiting to spin a tale or two.  Eamonn, in his druid garb, will dazzle young minds (older ones too) on this autumnal woodland journey.

Oakfield Glen is a treasure trove.  A Victorian stone bridge and old ice house offer a glimpse of days gone by. And today’s well-used paths connect Oakfield to the neighbouring council-owned Bashfordsland Wood.

The wood is also home to some unusual occupants. The Púca, which are fairy-like creatures, will be hiding in the treetops.  According to folklore, the Púca are the most mischievous of all the fairies in Ireland.  Thankfully, Oakfield’s crafty creations are sculptures, made from steel and with input from local primary schools.

Michelle McCaughtry, the Woodland Trust’s people engagement officer, said: “Oakfield Glen is well worth a visit at any time of the year.  But, to me, there’s something really special about this time of the year, in the run-up to Halloween.

“We’re especially lucky to have Eamonn Keenan on-board with his fantastic stories.  With a bit of drama and plenty of fun, the children are in for a real treat.  Simply book online, wrap-up warm and prepare to be entertained.”

Children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is £5 per child; £1 per accompanying adult. There are two slots to choose from: 1.30pm-2.30pm and 2.45pm-3.45pm. Booking in advance is essential. For further details and to book a place, visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/events
