Come and help in our vibrant lunch club for over 55s each week at Belfast Central Mission, 5 Glengall Street, Belfast. This service is seen as a lifeline for those who attend to relieve isolation and help them make connections. A hot meal is served every week by volunteers and we need more help. Role Purpose:

The BCM Lunch Club provides a welcoming space for older adults to socialise, enjoy a hot meal, and engage in stimulating and educational activities. It fosters a sense of community, combats loneliness, and promotes overall well-being by encouraging regular social interaction and support. This aligns with the BCM mission of ‘Supporting people at their point of need’

Key Responsibilities:

The following is a range of duties shared by the volunteer team at the lunch club.

  • Work in a team
  • Liaise with the chef on numbers, meal requirements etc.
  • Set the tables for lunch.
  • Set up the serving area.
  • Be the point of welcome to the lunch club.
  • Maintain an attendance register.
  • Serve lunch, clear tables, wash dishes and put away.
  • Engage with guests: Spend time chatting with our guests ensuring everyone feels included and valued.
  • Support Activities: Assist with setting up and tidying up, making sure everything runs smoothly.
  • Any other duties to ensure the smooth running of the lunch club and comfort and safety of our guests.

Skills and Qualities that will help you to fulfil the role:  

  • Food Safety - desirable but not essential as full training will be given.
  • Ability to work well in a volunteer team.
  • Ability to engage with the lunch club guests and make them feel welcome.
  • Ability to follow good practice to safeguard vulnerable adults.
  • Awareness of basic health and safety to keep oneself and others safe.
  • Basic command of English language so you can communicate with other volunteers and lunch club guests.
  • Non-judgemental support and encouragement. An ability not to impose your own values and beliefs on others.

Training, Support and other Requirements:

  • Mandatory: Safeguarding, Food Hygiene Level 2
  • Any other training identified as required to fulfil the role.
  • To engage in regular one to one and/or group support and supervision sessions with the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • To support the aims and values of BCM
  • To respect the service user’s privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Free Access NI Check required.
