
Job Description
-To plan, develop and deliver a one to one Education programme for children with Down syndrome, aged 0 to 12, offering a user led approach.
-To work as part of a team to plan, develop and deliver our 0-3 and 4-7year old social programme, including summer scheme provision.
-Plan, review and assess Education sessions to monitor their effectiveness and to support planning and development of further sessions, ensuring regular updating to reflect best practice and evidence base
-Liaise closely with parents/carers and provide specialist advice and support regarding their child’s communication, language, literacy, numeracy and social developmental needs to ensure best outcomes
-Agree Education outcomes/targets with children and parents
-Help undertake risk assessments to ensure that all health and safety requirements are adhered to.
-Preparation of relevant teaching materials
-Liaise with school staff to ensure best practice and support for each of our children
-Assist in the planning, design and implementation of innovative and evidenced based ways of working with parents and FDST staff
-Motivate, encourage and support our children and young people with Down syndrome to engage in the programme
-To work with Foyle Down Syndrome Trust’s team, following all policies and procedures
-Ensure that any issues in relation to safeguarding our children are brought to the immediate attention of our Designated Child Protection Officer or Manager
To develop and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with all Foyle Down Syndrome Trust’s members and staff, being committed as part of a team to providing high quality service provision to all our children with Down syndrome
Skills and Knowledge
Essential
-Relevant Degree i.e. Education, Early Years, Early Childhood Studies
or
-A minimum of 5 years paid experience as a Special Needs Assistant
and
-Excellent communication skills
-Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding
-Experience delivering education sessions to children and young people
-Experience carrying out risk assessments
Desirable
-Qualified Teacher
-Experience using interventions such as Makaton, PEC's, visual stories as methods of communication
-Experience delivering education sessions to children and young people with a learning disability

This is currently a 3 year post until September 2028 (Possible extension subject to funding) Appointment is subject to two suitable references and completion of an Enhanced Access NI check. This post is currently 21 hours per week, typically 3 x 7hour days. There are opportunities for increased hours.
