The role and responsibilities of the Community Development Officer within GenderJam NI are as follows:

  • Developing capacity within the trans community sector organisations through training, skills programmes and personal development work;

  • Identifying and demonstrating the needs of the trans community in Northern Ireland and produce plans to address those needs;

  • Working with trans sector colleagues to identify and progress with community development goals in the short, medium and long term;

  • Working alongside other organisations in the community and voluntary sector to develop good relations and develop joint projects;

  • Providing community development support to volunteer leaders as required;

  • Other duties as required.

 

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum of 2 year experience (either voluntary or employed) working directly with trans communities;

  • The successful applicant will demonstrate a robust understanding of the issues affecting trans communities;

  • Strong written and verbal* communication skills;

  • Ability to work both on their own initiative and as part of the established team at the Belfast Trans Resource Centre.

 

Desirable Criteria:

  • Relevant experience of working with young people;

  • Relevant experience of working in a Northern Ireland context;

  • Demonstrated basic facilitation skills, though training will be available.

 

Working hours and location

The successful applicant will have a working week of 20 hours and will primarily be based at the Belfast Trans Resource Centre, a community project led by TransgenderNI, though this is negotiable. Working hours will be agreed and reviewed with the line manager, though occasional unsocial hours may be required for community engagement work.

This is a 1-year fixed-term contract. Depending on funding this position will progress to a full-time 3-year contract in 2020.
