We extend to you an invitation to BCS NI AGM and Chair's Invitational Talk 2019. This year's theme will be Tech for Good, and following the AGM we introduce our guest speaker from CCEA, followed by a Panel Discussion chaired by Daniel Aldridge, BCS Senior Policy and Programme Manager.

About the Event

The Northern Ireland branch of the Chartered Institute for IT theme this year is: "Tech for Good". To start off our series of events we are delighted that CCEA have kindly agreed to present the findings from their latest report, "Why don't more your women study computing?"

Acknowledging the need for greater participation in computing at schools, alongside heightening levels of diversity and inclusion, led to this CCEA report. A significant gender disparity exists in computing at schools in NI, with considerably more males currently pursuing computing-related subjects at both GCSE and A Level.

The CCEA report examines the presently low levels of participation of female students in computing related subjects in NI, plus attempting to

  1. understand why fewer young women study these subjects, and
  2. establish various ways in which their participation might be encouraged and thus their overall entry numbers at school increased.

This presentation will also outline the barriers and discuss a range of potential remedies to low female participation in computing as schools, all considered in light of the need to cultivate a positive sense of belonging for females within the computing environment.

Following the talk from CCEA, BCS will host a panel discussion with invited guests to discuss their experience in the world of IT and how they are making IT good for society and creating a positive computing environment within their sectors.

So please come along to learn more about how we can help shift the dial to encourage and support more young people into the world of IT.

We look forward to welcoming you on the evening.
