Remembering Srebrenica, Genocide Commemoration Walk. 2022 Theme: Combatting Denial: Challenging Hatred

The Remembering Srebrenica NI Board request your company on the annual commemmoration walk for Srebrenica. Described by the United Nations as the ‘worst crime on European soil since the Second World War’, the killings at Srebrenica have been classified as genocide by both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal of the former Yugoslavia. Despite this unequivocal fact, denial of the Srebrenica genocide as well as the crimes against humanity committed across Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 to 1995 remains prevalent amongst individuals and institutions at the highest levels. Paying tribute to the victims of the Genocide, sending a clear message to future generations to say ‘Never Again’. Fifty years after the world said “Never Again” to the horrors of the Holocaust, genocide took place on European soil. The name Srebrenica has become synonymous with those dark days in July 1995 when, in the first ever United Nations declared safe area, thousands of men and boys were systematically murdered and buried in mass graves. The victims, who were Muslim, were selected for death on the basis of their identity. This was the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War. Lets come together as everyday upstanders to strengthen communities, challenge prejudice and hate. Join us on a walk of remembrance for the victims of the planned, systematic and industrialised murder of just under 100,000 Muslims, displacement of two million people and the genocidal rape of up to 50,000 women simply because of their identity. This is an opportunity for the NI community to come together in humanity, love and compassion and challenge hate, genocide and oppression. Denial brings not only more pain and suffering for the survivors but serves as a rallying call to continue the division and hatred as well as to glorify the murderers. Denial also serves as a significant impediment to peace and reconciliation which can never be achieved without acknowledgement.  Join us on the remembrance walk to help shine a light on the importance of combatting denial and support us in confronting the hatred behind the denial.   We hope that by coming together in a walk of remembrance, we will help empower individuals and communities to better understand and confront the denial which emboldens perpetrators and gaslights their victims, in order to help create safer, stronger and more cohesive communities.
