Mary McManus is a manager at East Belfast Independent Advice Centre and recently completed Master’s research at QUB, which looked at the anti-poverty potential of Community Wealth Building.

Community Wealth Building is establishing itself as an alternative and fairer approach to local economic development that is showing good outcomes in terms of reducing poverty, income inequality, enhancing local economic resilience and creating a low carbon and more democratic economy. The ‘Preston Model’, was the forerunner of this approach in the UK with many other areas such as Newham, Islington and lately North Ayrshire and Wigan adopting Community Wealth Building as their approach. The devolved administrations in Wales and Scotland are also taking forward work in this area and closer to home the Department for Communities here in NI has just announced their commitment to embedding Community Wealth Building in their priorities and investment plans. As advisers we know that levels of inequality had been constantly rising prior to COVID-19; the pandemic has laid bare those inequalities. Community Wealth Building offers us an opportunity to reset, and NOT return to a normal that was the problem in the first place. Join us to learn more about Community Wealth Building.
