The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest dedicated grant funder of the UK’s heritage. Since 1994, we’ve awarded over £8bn to more than 44,000 projects across the UK. Using money raised by the National Lottery, we inspire, lead and resource the UK’s heritage to create positive and lasting change for people and communities, now and in the future.

About us

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest dedicated funder of heritage in the UK.

We believe that understanding, valuing and sharing our heritage brings people together, inspires pride in communities and boosts investment in local economies.

  • We distribute National Lottery grants from £3,000 to £5million and over, funding projects that sustain and transform the UK's heritage
  • We provide leadership and support across the heritage sector, and advocate for the value of heritage

From local parks to landscapes, castles to community projects, we fund a wide range of heritage projects across the UK, which help to create positive and lasting change for people and communities.

We have offices across the UK, and we've supported projects from Orkney and Northern Ireland’s Mourne coast to Pembrokeshire and the white cliffs of Dover.

In Northern Ireland, we've awarded over £270m to more than 1,600 projects since 1994.

National Heritage Memorial Fund

Our parent body is the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF). The NHMF allocates Lottery funds to heritage: The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the distributor.

We are a non-departmental public body accountable to Parliament via the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Our decisions about individual applications and policies are entirely independent of the government.
