The Lakeland County of Fermanagh hosted a Community Walk Leader training day at Florence Court, Thursday 5th June 2014. This fully subscribed course was designed to train local community leaders and volunteers to carry out short, safe and accessible walks for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

A fun filled and informal day, this superb course equipped attendees with vital navigation and route planning skills as well as the knowledge to lead walks and manage a successful walking group. Overall it installed individuals with the confidence to run a successful walking programme that would improve the overall health and wellbeing of their local community.

Local woman Philomena McLoughlin from Action Mental Health, Enniskillen commented “I enjoyed the day and feel confident and ready to be a walk leader”. Community Walk Leader Judy Cresswell also added “I learnt a lot, especially how to read maps. I will be using these skills to set challenges for my walking group.”

Nicola Cully, Marketing Officer at Walking In Your Community commented “It was great to see so many people attend this training course in Fermanagh. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and I am positive that they can make a difference in the local community under this scheme.”

Walking In Your Community are holding a number of training days across Northern Ireland in 2014 aiming to get more communities out walking.
