Advice NI offers formal and non-formal training for those working in the advice sector, community & voluntary sector, local authorities, legal & financial institutions who wish to develop their skillset.

Our courses include nationally and locally accredited qualifications as well as continued professional development (CPD) training.

Advice NI also offers in-house training and/or workshops at a time, date or location convenient to you. We can amend existing courses to meet your specific needs or fully develop courses based on your training requirements.

Understanding Orders Charging Land and Orders for Sale (S)

Monday, 9 May 2016

10:30am to 4:00pm

This skilled level course will provide an overview of the legislation and case law on orders charging land and orders for sale in Northern Ireland and the process for obtaining and challenging these orders. This course will soon be accredited with OCNNI.

Who Should Attend: 

Wiseradviser courses are appropriate to anyone currently working with vulnerable clients facing financial difficulties.

Fees: 

All Wiseradviser courses are FREE to members of the following MAT partner agencies: • Advice NI • Citizens Advice NI • Step Change • Institute of Money Advisers (IMA) However, for accredited courses a £55 charge is applied for those seeking OCNNI accreditation (Note: this is £80 for the Insolvency course, which has 4 modules). Accreditation is currently optional for accredited courses but the paperwork must be completed for MAS accreditation.

CPD Hours: 

This course is worth 6 CPD hours.

Education/Professional Framework: 

As explained above Wiseradviser training can enable participants to demonstrate that they meet the requirements of the Money Advice Service quality framework for individuals. This framework is mapped against a variety of NOS, so by achieving the relevant training advisers can demonstrate that they meet the NOS associated with that activity set (see pathway on page 21). The Advice Work activity set, for example, covers 9 NOS including ‘First Line Money and Debt Legal Advice/ Casework’ and ‘Provide and Receive Referrals on Behalf of Clients’. The courses link to a range of NOS beyond those covered by the MAS quality mark, including ‘Providing First Line Consumer Legal Advice/Casework’, ‘First line Housing Legal Advice/Casework’, ‘First Line Mental Health Legal Advice/Casework’. The Wiseradviser courses can be used as evidence towards a range of units in the Advice and Guidance and Legal Advice qualifications. This includes ‘Negotiate on Behalf of Clients (Unit 11), ‘Support Clients to Make Use of Advice and Guidance Services’ (Unit 2), and ‘Present Cases for Clients in Formal Proceedings’. 

Accreditation: 

There are three levels to Wiseradviser training – Generalist Level (G) (provides basic principles of money advice), Skilled Level (S) (develops skills and knowledge of generalist money advisers), and Specialist Level (SP) (helps advisers deal with more complex cases). Most Wiseradviser courses are accredited with OCNNI at Level 3 or 4 and we will apply for the Skillsmark endorsement within the coming year. See individual courses for further details. Learners must meet pre-entry requirements for skilled and specialist Wiseradviser courses. These can be found at http://www.wiseradviser.org

An Introduction to Universal Credit - Fully Booked

Universal Credit will fundamentally change the current means-tested benefits and tax credit systems as we know it. This in depth 1 day course will explain the detailed rules of Universal Credit including the basic conditions of entitlement, financial conditions, benefit caps, under occupancy penalties and claimant conditionality. It will highlight in detail how Universal Credit entitlement is calculated for single people, lone parents, couples, those with dependent children, those who have limited capability for work, carers and those who need assistance with housing costs. Learning Objectives: By the end of this course learners will be able to: Identify which benefits Universal Credit replaces and which remain outside Universal Credit. Understand how Universal Credit is calculated for different groups of people. Be able to calculate Universal Credit Maximum amounts and the benefit cap. Understand the complex conditions of entitlement to Universal Credit.

Who Should Attend: 

The course is recommended for advisers and other colleagues who have a baseline knowledge of the Social Security Benefits system or those who have completed our 'Overview of Welfare Reform' course.

Fees: 

There is a charge of £75 to Advice NI Members, £95 to Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and £125 to Private and Statutory Sector organisations.

What you need to know about Child Maintenance

Child maintenance is a vital but often misunderstood source of financial help for lone parents. This practical and informative briefing will allow advisers to gain a better understanding of the Child Maintenance Service’s functions to help their clients navigate the service more effectively and maximise their incomes. It will cover: - Who can claim, the application process and what powers CMS possess. - It’s impact on Social Security Benefits (and vice versa). - How the CMS has developed and evolved and what welfare reform means for maintenance. - What to do if things go wrong with a claim.

Who Should Attend: 

Anyone advising, signposting or supporting lone parents, or anyone assisting parents without care to reach an agreement with CMS on payment.

Rates: Enforcement and Liability (S)

This skilled level course provides a comprehensive overview of Rates in Northern Ireland. It will enable you to advise your client on their rights and responsibilities in relation to Rates including liability, exemption, calculations, bills, help with rates and the debt recovery process. This course is accredited with OCNNI at Level 3. This is a core course for those seeking MAS accreditation at Advice Work or above.

Safer Lone Working for Frontline Staff

Offering help to people in a work situation, often in difficult circumstances, doesn't have to mean taking risks. Feeling safe and well doesn't just extend to face-to-face work with clients, it includes telephone interactions with them as well. This practical, interactive and engaging workshop style training is designed to equip participants with thought provoking awareness raising tools and processes to improve their personal safety on the job, either on or off site.

Who Should Attend: 

The course is designed for anyone working directly in a client facing role and whose job role often requires that they work alone, visit clients, or deal with clients on the telephone.

Identifying Social Policy Issues

Tuesday, 17 May 2016 - 10:30am to 1:00pm

This half day training course will enable you to understand and identify what social policy issues are and how you can gather evidence and record the issues more effectively for campaigning and lobbying purposes. It will also look at practical steps that can be taken to address social policy issues.

Who Should Attend: 

The course is aimed at front line advisers, sign posters and support workers to build upon their one to one advice and casework skillset to overcome systematic obstacles. It is also useful for anyone interested in the social policy work or embarking on a social policy career.

Fees: 

There is a charge of £30 to Advice NI Members, £45 to Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and £65 to Private and Statutory Sector organisations.

CPD Hours: 

There are 3 CPD hours available for this course.

Education/Professional Framework: 

This course can be used as evidence towards a range of units in our Advice and Guidance NVQ’s and Legal Advice qualifications including ‘Manage Personal Case Load’ (Unit 14). It is also linked to the National Occupational Standards for Legal Advisers including ‘Providing Initial Legal Advice in Consumer Law’.

This training will help you to identify and effectively record social policy issues and give you some practical steps to enable your agency to highlight these to policy makers.

Introduction to Providing Debt Advice (G)

Monday 23rd May & Monday 6th June 2016

10.30am – 4.00pm

This skilled level course will provide you with the ability to identify when an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) is appropriate. It will explain the IVA procedures and enable you to make appropriate referrals to Insolvency Practitioners. This course is a module of the Insolvency Options course accredited with OCNNI at Level 3. It is a core course for those seeking MAS accreditation at Advice Work or above

Effective Training and Presentation Delivery

This course will help you to recognise and enhance the presentation and delivery skills that you already possess, as well as develop new skills in this area. It will cover: - Understanding learning preferences and how you can tailor lessons or presentations to meet different learning styles. - Understanding the principles of adult learning. - Building your confidence and skills as a trainer or presenter. - Creative group facilitation and delivery tips. - Dealing with challenging training scenarios. 

Who Should Attend: 

Anyone wishing to develop or improve their training and presentation skills. This can include those who currently train or present, or those wishing to transfer their adviser knowledge into the realm of training and/or presenting.
