Parent Support Worker

This is a part-time role (flexible hours) to support parents from diagnosis of their child and to develop the Angel Eyes NI parents forum.

Purpose of job – to provide parents with emotional support and unbiased guidance and advice.

To provide the link between parents and develop the Angel Eyes NI forum. Through the project we wish to extend the services of support we currently provide by offering follow up help and support which this project will provide.

 

  • To be the first contact with parents, to offer support and information
  • To expand and raise awareness to parents about the Parents Forum
  • To develop and maintain good relationships with other partnership organisations such as RNIB, BCUK and Guide Dogs and other relevant voluntary organisations across Northern Ireland
  • To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date records
  • of all work with families and young people, using the Angel

Eyes NI database

  • To act as a representative of Angel Eyes and actively promote the awareness of rights, respect and responsibilities for children and young people who are visually impaired. 
  • To contribute regularly to Angel Eyes NI Board and Committee meetings when requested and where appropriate attend events. 
  • To undertake any job related training as required and

specified by the Interim Manager and the Chair.

  • This list of tasks is not exhaustive and will be reviewed from time to time in discussion with the post holder.

 

Essential Skills

  • A qualification or a minimum of 1 years’ experience in counselling or advice-giving; or
  • Experience of an eye condition
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • An ability to work on own initiative
  • Willingness to attend training courses
  • Ability to present to committees and boards when required
  • Flexible approach to working hours

 

Desirable

 

  • Knowledge of a wide range of eye conditions and how these can impact child development
  • I.T. skills, such as MS word, outlook, internet and recording onto databases
  • A car would be desirable but not essential for this role
