'Tools For Action' Summer School

Participation and the Practice of Rights

Participation and the Practice of Rights

Cost: Donations requested. Bursary places available

PPR’s annual Summer School will be held in The MAC, Belfast on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th August 2014

‘’It’s the way human rights work should be, but isn’t, done.’’
Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and UN Commissioner for Human Rights speaking on the work of PPR (January 2013)

Since 2006, Participation and the Practice of Rights (PPR) has supported directly affected people to use human rights to campaign on issues including social housing, mental health, regeneration, unemployment, and children’s play. As a result, these people have achieved real improvements in some of Northern Ireland’s most marginalised communities.

Our work has shown us that government decision making which excludes the most vulnerable leads to poor outcomes on the ground. Therefore PPR’s work supports disadvantaged groups to hold government to account, and ensure they play a meaningful role in decision-making processes which affect their lives.

PPR’s unique approach to making change is creative and flexible, and makes use of international human rights standards, community organising, policy work and campaigning. It has been recognised as a good practice methodology by the United Nations Office of the High Commission for Human Rights.

The Summer School sessions will run from 10am – 4pm each day and the curriculum will include:

  • Human rights and change – how does it work?
  • Tools For Action: How communities can use human rights
  • Organising grassroots groups
  • How change is won...and lost:  the autonomy of a campaign
  • How power responds

Participants do NOT require previous experience of campaigning to attend Summer School

A small number of bursary places are available through the Inez McCormack Fund.  However to support PPR’s work with marginalised communities and groups, we ask those individuals and organisations who can afford it, to pay a contribution for their participation (although these contributions are still heavily subsidised). The contribution will cover 2 days’ attendance at Summer School , course materials, lunch & refreshments each day.  A tailored package including accommodation is available on request.
