Managing the media with Sarah Travers

This is a hands on course on 28 January 2016 from 9.30am-4.30pm will help you and your organisation make the best use of the media by creating good stories and also responding to media enquiries even on difficult or sensitive issues.  You can use this course to develop or hone your communication skills.  If live interviews on camera or radio cause you any anxiety, it can be managed. It is an opportunity for you to take time to build your communication skills, they are an essential asset to your organisation.The course will cover the following:

Techniques for confident media interviews

• Planning and preparation
• Stress management techniques
• Saying what needs to be said with control and assurance
• Body language and building rapport
• Practice interview techniques with a broadcaster mentor

Navigating the broadcast industry

• The dynamics of a newsroom
• Using social media to build a journalist contact base
• What journalists need from you for an interesting story
• Capturing a journalist attention with a punchy press release

Radio or TV Interviews

• Questions to ask the media production team in advance of your interview
• Planning your key message
• Effective use of language
• Bringing your subject alive for different audiences
• Delivering a message in a short sound-bite for radio, video or TV

Case Studies

• Identifying engaging case studies
• Being accountable to your case study participants
• Sympathetic preparations of case studies for the camera or radio

Maximising the impact of your media interview

• Promoting your media appearance on social media channels

The cost of the course is £100 for NICVA members and £150 for non-members.
