Be a ‘Wellbeing Champion’ in your community

 

IMPORTANT ***All volunteer activity will be done remotely, in line with social distancing precautions outlined by the education authorities. Our call for Befriending/Wellness Champion Volunteers is important now more than ever. The outbreak of COVID-19 is a time of uncertainty for everyone and it is absolutely crucial that we’re here to support those impacted the most, particularly by social isolation. Our Befriender Volunteers will be on hand to connect with those in their communities who need a helping hand and someone to talk to***

 

We’re recruiting volunteers for our project which is based in Rathgill and Kilcooley. This volunteer role is ideal for someone who is interested in community development and who is an advocate for positive community relationships. You must be able to work in a remote capacity, using phone, email and/or video call. Any experience in mental health and community work is preferred, but don't let this stop you from applying! Volunteers should live in Rathgill, Kilcooley or neighbouring areas. Over 18s only.

 

Volunteer Role Tile: Wellbeing Champion

Responsible to: Volunteer Co-ordinator

Expected Commitment: A minimum of 1 hour per month to several hours per week, worked remotely and at your discretion; flexible day/time

About Us:  We’re a Bangor-based Counselling Service & Therapy Centre, well-known for providing mental health and wellbeing services to people of all ages. We provide a safe and confidential environment with a diverse range of complementary practices, such as talking therapies, life coaching, CBT, holistic therapies and yoga. Our mission is to provide an exceptional counselling service, where our multi-disciplinary approach is provided in a warm, supportive and non-judgemental space.

 

Role Summary: Our Wellbeing Champion volunteers will support uHub’s Wellbeing Strategy by promoting activities in local areas, encouraging others to access relevant health and wellbeing opportunities, collating activity data, sharing best practice and stories of success.

 

Primary Objectives: The purpose of the Wellbeing Champion role is to help implement and support uHub's Wellbeing Strategy through raising awareness of wellbeing activities, promoting healthy lifestyles and positive mental health. Champions will know their work areas and target area so they will be best placed to know what will work best in that environment and can pick out resources that fit their local environments. This role is best suited to someone who is keen to engage with their local community in a remote capacity using phone and internet.

 

Volunteer responsibilities:

  • Promoting targeted health campaigns through poster displays, emailing community organisations, emailing leaflets to the community, sharing posters on social media, and updating co-ordinator after information days you attend and your team meeting (e.g. World Mental Health Day, National No Smoking Day)
  • Organising activities remotely e.g. encouraging book club or hobby group which can be do via video call
  • You will be provided with suicide prevention training to help signpost people in crisis safely
  • Signposting to relevant services
  • Encouraging participation in uHub’s Wellbeing initiatives/challenges
  • Championing and promoting relevant health messages and events at uHub
  • Providing information to members of the community about our project at uHub via phone, email or video call
  • Role modelling and promoting a healthy culture within the community
  • Involvement in events across designated area, collaborative working with other champions volunteering at uHub
  • Providing activity information to the Volunteer Co-ordinator via wellbeing survey’s as required

 

What we’re looking for:

  • An enthusiasm for, and interest in wellbeing, improving the local environment and supporting engagement
  • Being approachable and willing to help
  • A basic understanding of healthy lifestyles and health promotion
  • Keen to keep up to date with activities within uHub’s Wellbeing programme, attend the occasional training event/meeting and collaborate with others via phone or email
  • Must have access to a phone and internet
  • Be willing to complete an Access NI background check
  • Have no previous criminal convictions
  • Over 18 years old
