Help us help isolated older people by becoming a volunteer Telephone Befriender with Engage with Age. Loneliness is an increasing issue for older people, with many older people in Belfast isolated at home. Loneliness affects older people's mental health and physical health, with one study saying loneliness can have the same affect as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. You can help by making some befriending phone calls every week and bringing some brightness into the lives of older people referred in to Engage with Age.
Telephone Befrienders are trained and supported by Engage with Age. Calling two isolated older people can take less than one hour per week. All volunteers undergo a recruitment process and are supported by staff members. Telephone calls are scheduled to meet the schedules of both the befriender and the person getting the call.
One beneficiary said: “I have never been on my own before and its now been nearly two years since my husband had to go into care. It was really hard to lose independence. The calls encourage me and I love to hear from my Befriender and I always feel better after the call.”
Please help brighten a lonely older person's day by becoming a volunteer Telephone Befriender.
