The Theatre Peace Building Project draws on this previous work and, in partnership with Holywell Trust, Thomas D’Arcy McGee Foundation and Queens University, will programme a range of nationally / internationally theatre artists with significant experience of using arts activity in areas of conflict & post conflict / areas of social breakdown to promote healing and reconciliation within Northern Ireland and the Border Counties.

Tender Brief

We are seeking to receive Tenders from Local Socially Engaged Creative Artists who will deliver the Local Projects. By Local Artists we mean artists living and / or working in Northern Ireland & the Border Counties.

Each selected Local Artist will work with communities and people most affected by The Northern Ireland Troubles. The Theatre Peace Building Project is particularly interested in addressing historical events within Northern Ireland’s and the Border Counties’ fractured and divided communities including bombings, shootings, paramilitary activity, and allegations of collusion by State bodies.

Local Artists will work closely with, and be mentored by, the first of our selected National / International Artists: Jo Egan. The aim is to develop meaningful creative collaboration which aids the delivery and impact of quality Arts & Peace Building work, as well as enhancing the Local Artists’ creative practice.

We will select two Local Artists to work alongside and be mentored by the first of our National / International artists (details below).

The National / International artist is Jo Egan. Jo was selected as the first of four Socially Engaged Theatre Practitioners. Jo’s six month residency has commenced (from May 2018) and will culminate in a theatre production at The Playhouse in November 2018. Jo will be working in and around the North West of Ireland region.

Jo is a professionally produced playwright, trained oral archivist, theatre producer, director and facilitator. She is the Artistic Director of Macha Productions, a theatre company dedicated to the democratisation of theatre creation and participation. For more information: http://www.jo-egan-playwright.com/

Jo’s residency is based in the North West of Ireland; her project studio is in The Playhouse.

We are inviting Local Artists to apply to be mentored by Jo Egan under mentorship, Local Artists will refine, enhance, and develop their own artistic practice, particularly as regards using the arts as a tool for peace-building and positive community relations change. Local Artists will deliver theatre / creative art / multi-media projects (driven by their own artistic medium and talents) in association with individuals and communities affected by the conflict.

It is expected that Local Projects will be delivered in communities where significant events, during The Troubles have affected all sides of the community. Potential participants include victims & survivors, relatives of those killed or injured, former paramilitaries, current / retired security service personnel, and other people significantly affected.

The Local Artists will meet and work with a range of statutory and community groups, including victims & survivors groups in specific areas within the N. Ireland and Border Counties to gather ideas in order to devise, design, and deliver a creative project culminating in a public event (e.g. theatre /multi-media /creative arts production).

Activities will include:

  • Planning meetings.
  • Introductory workshops with specific communities and individuals.
  • Selecting and identifying the specific historical event/s to be addressed.
  • Identifying the specific peacebuilding issues and needs of the community or individuals.
  • Designing and delivering a Creative Arts project (minimum 3 week contact time) culminating in a Creative Arts production which will be put on in the area in which it originates.

Each Local Artist will work with groups and individuals for a minimum of 3 weeks (though we expect some Local projects will last up to two months) identifying and working closely with approximately six cross community participants. We expect these individuals to have been personally affected by the conflict, and / or be victims and survivors of the conflict, including former paramilitaries, current / retired security service personnel, relatives of those killed or injured and other people significantly affected. Each Local Artist will address the social and political issues highlighted by the communities or participating individuals.

The Local Artist may work in any mode or medium of the Creative Arts and should be willing to work in close collaboration with a National / International Artist to refine, enhance, and develop their own artistic practice particularly within an understanding of using the arts as a tool for peace-building and positive community relations change.

Each Local Theatre / Multi-media / Creative Arts project has a total budget including Artist’s Fee of €15K / £13K.
