To supervise teams within the Library and Information Service to provide a high quality, efficient and effective learning resource support service to College learners.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The post-holder will work under the direction and guidance of the Library and Information Services Manager to provide an efficient and effective front line service in the College
  • The post holder will assist teaching staff including Curriculum Area Managers in developing reading lists, books and on-line resources for courses
  • The post holder will assist in the development of the Library and Information Service operational plans and report monthly on Key Performance Indicators

 

  • Key areas of operational responsibility are in supervising a teams to support the learner by:
  • Providing Information Retrieval support
  • Providing front line Information Literacy Training
  • Operating automated library systems
  • Maintaining the organisation of College Learning Resources – hard copy and online
  • Delivering a high quality customer service

 

  • The post-holder will supervise teams of front line Library and Information Service staff and will be expected to direct the delivery of front line services including:
  • To put in place processes that will guide learners to retrieve relevant information in print, non-print and online formats to support their learning
  • To demonstrate and support users in the use of the range systems for accessing print, non-print and online resources
  • To select, order, process and receipt books and other resources to support learners in line with College procedures and budgets
  • To demonstrate the use of a core range of software packages and support the use of other Library and Information Service based learning support equipment
  • To provide relevant support for class inductions in Learning and Information Retrieval and providing individual induction and guidance to learners
  • To provide promotion and marketing of learning resources and the Library and Information Service in the College
  • To compile relevant lists of book, non-book and other resource lists for learners
  • To deal with front line learner IT/ILT support requests within the Library and Information Service, providing assistance and guidance in the use of core software packages and systems or referring these support requests on to other relevant support services
  • To deal with front line learner printing and copying support within the Library and Information Service, providing assistance and guidance in the use of these systems
  • To keep up-to-date with relevant College IT/ILT systems within the Library and Information Service to assist in the delivery of relevant services to college learners
  • To operate the College’s automated Library Management system (LMS) within the Library and Information Service
  • To operate all the modules of the Library and Information Service LMS: Circulation, Searching, Acquisitions, Cataloguing and Inventory
  • To maintain the order and organisation of learning resources within the Library and Information Service: filing, shelving, tidying, labelling and minor repair work and to provide relevant input to line management on College learning resource stock
  • To compile and maintain current information files, print or non-print, to support College learners
  • To follow all procedures to assist in the audit of College learning resources
  • To handle, record and receipt of all monies collected in the day-to-day operation of the Library and Information Service
  • The supervision of all areas and resources within the Library and Information Service
  • To instil a welcoming approach and high quality customer service in the Library and Information Service to College learners
  • To provide referral to other College Support Services as required
  • To deputise in the absence of the Library and Information Services Manager

General

  • To ensure the effective application of health and safety procedures for all staff and learners within the Library and Information Service and the wider College
  • To contribute to the achievement of the College’s mission, values and strategic directions.
  • To interact with all other support units, departments and curriculum schools to ensure the effective operation of the Library and Information Service in the support of the College curriculum
  • To take an active role in cross College functions such as enrolment
  • Act, if directed, as Fire Marshall or Fire Warden
  • Carry out, if directed, the role of First Aider (subject to College policy & procedures)
  • To promote, implement and ensure compliance with all statutory obligations and College policies and procedures in particular the College’s Equality Scheme and Equal Opportunities Policy and actively promote equality and good relations in all aspects of college business

Working Pattern


During term-time the post holder will be required to work a minimum of one evening per week. The opening hours of the library during term time are 0830-2000 Mon-Thu and 0830-1600 on Friday. Outside of term-time the opening hours are usually 0900-1600. Please note that these may change dependent on the needs of the College.

 

Essential Criteria

  • EITHER hold a minimum of a qualification at BTEC Higher, or NVQ Level 5, or above, in a relevant subject PLUS a minimum of ONE years’ recent experience of working in a library environment OR hold a professional library qualification at level 4 (accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) PLUS a minimum of TWO years’ recent experience of working in a library environment
  • English GCSE Grade C or above OR Essential Skills level 2 (or higher)
  • Maths GCSE Grade C or above OR Essential Skills level 2 (or higher) in Numeracy, or equivalent
  • A minimum of one year’s recent experience (in the last 5 years) of supervising staff
  • Recent demonstrable experience in the use of ICT systems, including Microsoft Office and Library Management Systems
  • Demonstrable front line library experience - all aspects of library operations including issuing books and cataloguing
  • Experience of working with others and in teams to deliver successful outcomes
  • Demonstrable customer service experience
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
