Safe Places for Children have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and dedicated staff members to join our growing team to provide care to the most vulnerable traumatised young people between the ages of 7-13 within Northern Ireland.

Post: Residential Youth Worker 

Project: Children’s Residential Home (Downpatrick Area)

Contract: Full-Time Contract 

Salary: £25,000 + per a year. Paid Weekly

Background Information:

Safe Places for Children provide young people with individualised therapeutic residential services. 

We care for small numbers of pre-teen (2/3) children within a regular house.  We have a small and cohesive staff group that provides consistent predictable support. We endeavour not to utilise agency staff to maintain consistency and familiarity for the children in our care. 

The children that can be placed in our home’s may have been exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences and as such may display challenging behaviours that include but are not limited to the following; property damage, absconding, self-harming, sexually inappropriate behaviours, suicidal ideation, fire fascination, physical aggressions including hitting, spitting, kicking, threatening and verbal aggression.

We are a registered charity and a paperless organisation with all documentation and reporting online. 

General responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following criteria:

  • Carry out duties and responsibilities in a manner which assures the safety of young people, colleagues, and the public.
  • Contribute to a strong and positive team culture by being flexible and supportive of colleagues. 
  • Contribute to ongoing Risk Assessments, Safety Plans, and updated Positive Behaviour Support Plans.
  • Ensuring the highest standards of care, in relation to the Children’s physical behavioural and emotional needs throughout the night.
  • Achieve outcomes (life skills, coping skills, school, health, therapy, family) and ensure appropriate child participation in all aspects of care.
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, tidiness, comfort, safety, homeliness
  • Assist with homework
  • Support child to engage in suitable activities
  • Support child to learn life skills in a planned and supported way
  • provide transport to and from contact using staff car
  • Build rapport with the child
  • Provide emotional support
  • Complete daily shift reports
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Shifts

  • A regular shift is 24 hours. It consists of 16 hours awake working time and 8 hours paid sleepover period however this can vary depending on the needs of the young person and registered manager.
  • 28 weekday hours & 10 weekend hours & 2 sleepovers per week.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with challenging behaviours such as verbal and physical aggression preferably in a residential setting. 
  • Essential:  Level 3 Diploma (Relevant Subject) minimum
  • Desirable: 3rd level qualification in a relevant subject is desirable
  • Have a full UK Driver’s License for 1 year
  • Be eligible for Northern Ireland Social Care Council Registration and undergo an Enhanced Access NI
  • At least 21 years of age and 4 years older than our must current young person at placement. This is in line with The Children Home Standards 2014 set by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.
