MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST: To increase equality of opportunity of individuals from minority ethnic backgrounds through identifying and addressing needs while developing capacity and building relationships with participant communities.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide a drop-in support service for members of BME communities within the Causeway Coast and Glens Council District.
  2. Facilitate individuals and ethnic groups and provide culturally sensitive services to meet their needs as identified through primary and secondary research across the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough e.g. Causeway Multi Cultural Forum, Causeway Intercultural Forum, Bulgarian groups.
  3. To work closely with CAC (Community Advice Centre) to promote a culturally sensitive advice service.
  4. Assist ethnic communities to develop their capacity through direct small scale intervention, including funding for projects and events and the provision of ESOL language classes liaising with other service providers to organise and run language classes
  5. Assist in the delivery of Peace IV Community Integration Programme providing training and mentoring to a wide variety of groups aimed at developing community integration and cohesion.
  6. Liaise with relevant agencies to develop signposting service and information on services and particular documents available in relevant languages.
  7. Provide a range of networking opportunities and capacity building initiatives to engage individuals from ethnic minority and migrant worker communities.
  8. To work with existing community organisations to ensure the inclusion of ethnic minority groups in the planning and delivery of new projects. Encourage volunteers to be part of this process.
  9. To deliver anti-racism, prejudice awareness and hate crime initiatives/training to a wide variety of groups including local government, schools and youth groups.
  10. Assist in the delivery of events designed to promote Multi-culturalism.
  11. Attend fora and events organised by other organisations in the field to share information and good practice and engage in PR activity to promote the project.
  12. To arrange and book trained interpreters for the project’s work, as appropriate.
  13. To undertake monitoring and evaluation of the project related to the action plan developed for the project. Produce evaluation summaries and reports and make any necessary recommendations for improvement.
  14. To prepare monthly and quarterly reports to the Centre Manager and Board of Trustees detailing progress in relation to the programme.
  15. To participate in staff meetings and appraisals as requested.
  16. To work evenings and weekends as and when necessary to ensure effective delivery of services.
  17. Any other duties as reasonably required by the Centre’s Manager.

 

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

Essential:

Fluency in both spoken and written English

Fluency in Polish (majority language in this area)

3rd Level qualification in a relevant discipline eg: Ethnic & Cultural studies, community development, social policy and a minimum of one year’s BME development practice/experience in either a paid or voluntary capacity or

Minimum of 3 years work undertaken with ethinic minority communities / foreign nationals / migrant workers either in a paid of voluntary capacity.

At least one year’s experience in project delivery, organising events and delivering training.

Be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of issues facing ethnic minority communities and foreign nationals in Northern Ireland.

Be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of statutory, voluntary and community sector.

Be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of Microsoft office package and be I.T. competent and can write/type reports.

Be able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Be able to demonstrate working on your own initiative.

Have access to a form of transport necessary to carry out the duties of the post.

Be willing to work evenings and weekends as and when required.

Desirable:

  • Fluency or knowledge of other languages eg: Russian or Slovakian etc.
  • Experience of public relations activity.
  • Be able to demonstrate relevant experience in carrying out research, particularly community based research and to accurately compile and collate data.
