Outreach Worker (Fixed Term)

To work individually and as part of an Enhanced Outreach Team to provide a low threshold harm reduction service in the community for those who misuse alcohol and drugs at harmful levels, but are not engaged in formal treatment.

Reports to: Head of Service for Substance Misuse
Salary: Scale Points 24 – 28, £21,923 - £24,916 per annum
Department: Homelessness Services
Location: South Eastern Trust Area
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week (may include evenings and weekends)
Job Purpose: To work individually and as part of an Enhanced Outreach Team to provide a low threshold harm reduction service in the community for those who misuse alcohol and drugs at harmful levels, but are not engaged in formal treatment.

Essential

1. Relevant certified professional qualification of at least NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in Health and Social Care, Community Justice or Counselling (or similar) where addictions / substance misuse formed a substantial part.

OR

2 years recent, (past 5 years) direct work experience with substance using clients in a full time post, where you have demonstrated evidence of the following:

  • Managing a caseload
  • One to one work (with substance using clients)
  • Employing harm reduction techniques


2. Undertaken training in harm reduction / substance use.
3. A knowledge of the sector and legislative requirements of working with vulnerable adults/young people/homeless people.
4. Strong PC skills.
5. Valid driving licence and access to a car to undertake duties associated with the role.

Desirable Criteria
1. Experience (breadth and depth) of using screening and assessment tools to gauge and prioritise need.
2. Providing Brief Interventions.
3. Knowledge of Community Engagement techniques.
4. Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing techniques.
5. Recognised third level qualification (or equivalent) in Health and Social Care, Community Justice or Counselling (or similar) where addictions / substance misuse formed a substantial part.
