Freelance Peripatetic Tutors for Crescendo Project

The partners’ vision is to improve outcomes for children through music. The project aims to increase the resilience, aspirations and emotional development of children from areas of social and economic disadvantage through a programme of music skills development, to increase participants’ musical skills while contributing to their improved wellbeing and self-worth.

Situated in four schools in north and west Belfast, the project aims to deliver weekly workshops with P1-P3 classes to develop fundamental music skills and progressing to learning orchestral instruments from P4-P7.

With support from Community Foundation for Northern Ireland through the Ballygrainey Fund and the Lord and Lady Lurgan Trust, we now seek to hire 3 peripatetic tutors: one each in upper strings, lower strings and woodwind to start working weekly with our Crescendo P4 students.

Responsibilities

Each peripatetic tutor will be responsible for small group lessons at each Crescendo school on one day per week.

Skills and Experience

The Peripatetic Tutor role will require:

• A degree or equivalent qualification in music, music performance and/ or music teaching or equivalent work experience in individual or group tutoring
• Flexibility of approach to learning, and an ability to motivate learners of varying abilities
• Flexibility in terms of working hours
• A passion for teaching music and ability to adapt to each pupil’s needs
• Ability and experience of working with individual and/or small groups of children across Key Stage Two (7-11 years)
• Desirable: Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work as part of a wider team.
• Desirable: Experience of leading or co-leading workshops or lessons in a group music tuition context
• Desirable: Awareness of the primary school curriculum in Northern Ireland including social and emotional learning.

Freelance Peripatetic Fee

£140 for one full day per week.  It is anticipated that there will be 10 workshops that will run weekly within the school term from late January to late April with the possibility of an extension to early June 2020. We anticipate that these lessons will run again from September-June 2021 (funding dependent).

Tutors will be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance Contributions, and holiday/ sick pay will not be payable.

Tutors will be subject to the relevant Access NI police check procedures and must adhere to the Orchestra’s Safeguarding, Health and Safety and other relevant policies in all aspects of their work.
