The Board of Directors of NI Open Government Network CIC (NIOGN) is currently inviting expressions of interest from suitable individuals to join the board of directors. This is a voluntary position.

The Board provides strategic leadership to the organisation, ensuring it is well run and delivering the outcomes for which it has been set up. Directors will proactively work to fulfill NIOGN’s aim to contribute to delivering more open, transparent and accountable government that empowers citizens to shape decisions that impact on their lives.

Opportunities

As a Director with the NIOGN (CIC) you will be part of a team that is committed to working with government and lobby politicians on the commitments to Open Government as identified in the Open Government National Action Plan. The NI commitments of the plan can be found here. There will be also opportunities to engage with civic society to increase understanding of democratic processes, the work of central and local government and of the NI Civil Service.

Responsibilities

Directors to the Board of NIOGN are responsible for: 

  • Setting the strategic direction to guide and direct the activities of the organisation;
  • Ensuring the effective management of the organisation and its activities; and
  • Monitoring the activities of the organisation to ensure they are in keeping with the founding principles, objects and values.
  • Attending regular meetings of the Board, online or in person
  • Representing NIOGN at other functions and meetings, according to their skills and interests
  • Supporting the work of the subgroups

Location & Time Commitment

Directors should be able to commit to attend regular board meetings once every 6-8 weeks f (for a duration of approx. 2 hours). Board meetings are held in Belfast, however remote attendance can be arranged.

Directors should also be able to commit on average two hours per week to tend to the core business of the organisation as and when it arises (such as responding to emails) and to support the work of the sub-groups. Communication with other Board members is typically done remotely through email and Slack. Occasionally, directors may attend and represent the organisation at relevant events and stakeholder meetings.

Individuals interested in this worthwhile role should be politically, socially and/or environmentally engaged and subscribe to the principles & values of Open Government. 

Directors should be committed to the overall vision of NIOGN and be passionate about this work to support better outcomes for society. 

We are looking for people who want to contribute to:

  • Broadening participation in government
  • Increasing transparency and the public availability of, and access to, data
  • Enhancing accountability
  • Policy-making and services that are more responsive to citizens' needs and priorities
  • Increasing public confidence in government
