To support the delivery and development of fun social interaction and communication of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a group setting. All Helping Hands facilitators must have a can do attitude and be proactive, enthusiastic and flexible.

Essential Criteria:

OCN Level 3 in Youth work or equivalent

NVQ Level 3 in Child Development or childcare or early years learning or Learning & Development or equivalent

 

Desirable Criteria:

2 years Experience in dealing with children or young people with special needs

Autism Awareness Trained

Child protection/ Safeguarding trained

First Aid trained

Good Leadership Skills

Good communication skills

Good time management skills

Good administration skills

Knowledge of special needs or a great understanding of the difficulties children face with regards to complex needs.

Knowledge of GDPR with regards to record keeping, and dealing and recording confidential information.

 

Main purpose of Job:

 

The role of the children activity facilitator will be to support the development of social group members within Helping Hands membership.  This will include working directly with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

 

As part of this role you will:

 

  • Develop weekly activities for children and young people with ASD and their siblings.
  • Develop a programme of activities (age specific) that will support children with ASD difficulties ie:  Sensory activities, Life skills, Social communication, Anxiety etc.
  • Use and develop communication tools, sensory tools and life skills equipment and programmes to develop the children and young people within social groups.
  • Provide play and interactive sessions to encourage communication and social skills within social groups.
  • Attend training programmes when necessary
  • Communicate with parents when applicable and keep detailed records if applicable.
  • Ability to take own initiative and be proactive when children are facing challenging situations.
  • Encourage fair and caring behaviours among the children when in a group setting.
  • Deal with first aid and health and safety situations, ensuring activities etc are safe before each session.
  • Adhere to Helping Hands policies and procedures
  • To gain knowledge of the range of activities, courses, opportunities, organisations and individuals who can be contacted for extra support of social group members via signposting.
  • To provide accurate monitoring information and record keeping
  • Provide a regular update to Helping Hands Committee and attend Quarterly planning sessions.
  • Organise and communicate effectively before each planned session with Helping Hands volunteers.

 

Any other duties that may arise.
