To ensure that Belfast Metropolitan College students receive accurate and detailed information in relation to careers education, information, advice and guidance in line with the student pathway.

PURPOSE OF POST: To ensure that Belfast Metropolitan College students receive accurate and detailed information in relation to careers education, information, advice and guidance in line with the student pathway.  To ensure that appropriate information advice and guidance in relation to Belfast Metropolitan College courses is available at all College open days. To proactively outreach a careers advice and guidance service to all Belfast Metropolitan College students across all campuses of the College        

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To provide a careers information, advice and guidance service to all Belfast Metropolitan College students across all campuses
  • To support the implementation of the College’s Employability Strategy
  • To liaise with appropriate course tutors in the College in order to promote careers information, advice and guidance within the curriculum
  • To support the UCAS application process for students seeking entry to higher education institutions and provide training and support for both staff and students involved in the process
  • To participate in pre-entry events such as Open Days/Information Days and to provide advice and guidance to prospective students
  • To participate in the delivery of pre-entry processes that ensure that the College’s services and courses are easily accessible and have clearly signposted progression routes to all levels
  • To work with schools partnership staff in developing careers education, information advice and guidance provision with partner schools
  • To develop a Widening Participation Strategy to provide an outreach careers advice and guidance service to those citizens of our community to do not see education as an option open to them
  • To maintain contact with appropriate education and guidance organisations and other external networks in order to ensure that the careers education, information advice and guidance services is informative, up to date and meets the standards of best practice
  • To work closely with the Careers Information, Advice and Guidance Manager in order to support the development of the College’s information, advice and guidance strategy
  • To undertake continuous review and evaluation of the College’s careers education, information, advice and guidance provision and ensure it is consistent with internal and external quality assurance requirements including QAA and Matrix
  • To prepare and disseminate a careers induction programme for all new students in the College

 

Resource Management and Financial Accountability

  • To work with staff across the College to develop and maintain a careers resource on all Belfast Metropolitan College campuses, incorporating information on education, training and employment
  • To establish, maintain and develop a comprehensive up to date web-based careers information resource (including on-line materials) which supports the curriculum areas of the College
  • To build up an IT resource outlining clear progression routes to all levels of curriculum delivery
  • To actively contribute to Service initiatives such as developing Information resources using a variety of media.
  • Contribute to on line opportunities and developments as a delivery mechanism for Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance

 

Process and Performance Management

  • To work as part of the Careers Team in order to create and develop a College-wide careers education programme to be undertaken by all full-time FE/HE students as part of their curriculum entitlement
  • In conjunction with relevant academic staff, develop and refine support systems and processes for the effective delivery of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance
  • To monitor the effectiveness of the careers education programme through a process of review and evaluation with the service Manager
  • To fully engage with DfE requirements in relation to the strategic development of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance and any associated College requirements e.g. staff training, reviews and where appropriate ETI inspections
  • To develop on-line VLE resources for careers education, information, advice and guidance delivery
  • To maximise the use of IT in the provision of the careers service in the College including on-line provision and data management
  • Collect, record and provide regular analysis of data in relation to the Services cycle of continuous quality improvements and the Colleges performance management processes.
  • To promote the College’s JobBank and where appropriate, collaborate on job placement initiatives
  • To work in partnership with the College’s Business Development department in order to promote and develop the College’s Employability Strategy
  • To proactively contribute to the provision of a high quality customer-focused service

General

  • To prepare relevant reports and contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate management information systems
  • To participate in staff development and training activities in order to update knowledge, skills and professional competence needed to carry out the role effectively
  • To carry out other duties as assigned by Management
  • To support the College’s admissions and enrolment processes across all campuses
  • To attend team meetings as necessary
  • Act, if directed, as Fire Marshall or Fire Warden
  • Carry out, if directed, the role of First Aider (subject to College policy & procedures)
  • To promote, implement and ensure compliance with all statutory obligations and College policies and procedures in particular the College’s Equality Scheme and Equal Opportunities Policy and actively promote equality and good relations in all aspects of college business.

 

Working Pattern

The opening hours of the Careers Service (term time) are as follows:

  • Monday – Thursday        08:30-20:00
  • Friday                                    08:30-16:00

 

This is a part-time job-share role where the post-holder will be required to work 18 hours as follows:

  • Wednesday        12.30 – 16.30 (4 hours)
  • Thursday              09.00 – 17.00 (30 min unpaid lunch break, 7.5 hours)
  • Friday                    09.00 – 16.00 (30 min unpaid lunch break, 6.5 hours)

From time to time, based on business needs, e.g. College Information Days, the post holder may require a more flexible pattern of working hours.

The Careers Service remains open outside term time.  Please note that the post-holder’s hours would remain the same during these periods.
