By the end of the course participants will be able to understand the concept of Self-Myofascial Release and the role of fascia within the body and reasons why it becomes tight and understanding the concept of trigger points. Participants will have an understanding of why SMR should be employed as well as when is most beneficial to use SMR. They will also gain an understanding of what happens during SMR within the tissue fibres. Participants will be able to identify suitable equipment to use and know how to perform SMR on various muscles within the body. And finally the participants will know some of the contraindications that would prevent a person from undertaking SMR.
THE OVERARCHING AIM OF THIS COURSE IS TO PROVIDE PARTICIPANTS WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF SELF-MYOFASCIAL RELEASE TECHNIQUES, WHEN AND HOW THESE SHOULD BE APPLIED. THE SPECIFIC AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF COURSE ARE AS FOLLOWS:

• To explain what Fascia is
• To increase understanding of why fascia becomes tight
• To understand why SMR should be employed
• To understand the concept of trigger points
• To understand when to undertake SMR
• To understand what happens during SMR
• To cover the types of equipment used
• To gain an understanding of how to perform SMR on typical muscles
• To understand contraindications for SMR
PREREQUISITES:
Minimum of Level 2 Fitness Instructor, or Level 3 Personal Trainer. This course is also open to those able to show adequate prior learning for example, sports massage therapist, chiropractor, sport rehabilitator or physiotherapist.
