Disability Action's Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities Disability Action's Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities operates to promote and protect the human rights of people with disabilities.
The Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities was set up in 2006 to create a centre of expertise, which ensures the human rights of people with disabilities are recognised and protected.
Previous human rights treaties did not mention people with disabilities, which resulted in a lack of awareness of the human rights of disabled people and a failure to protect these rights. A new human rights agreement, the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (2006) is now legally binding in the United Kingdom. It confirms that people with disabilities have the same human rights as everyone else.
The core activities of the Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities include training, outreach, advocacy, research & policy and campaigning.
