Providing an innovative and groundbreaking approach to the Educational and Social inclusion of children and young people with Down syndrome, who are disadvantaged through the disabling attitudes in society.

Foyle Down Syndrome Trust was formed in 1995 by local parents of children with Down syndrome when they believed that more could be done to develop the potential of their children. They wished to integrate them into the local community and, by doing so, educate the community as to the capabilities of children and young people with Down syndrome. At present there are 75 children who are supported by the Trust.

Our specific objectives are to :

  • Empower and assist parents in leading their children and young people to independent living.
  • Support children with Down syndrome from 0-16 years old and their parents and their siblings by providing one-to-one home-based education to improve communication skills and develop literacy and numeracy skills to supplement and reinforce work done in school.
  • Develop a range of age appropriate inclusive Social & Personal development activities for children and young people with Down syndrome aged 0-25 and their peers to teach social and life skills and build self esteem e.g. Baby Massage, Youth clubs, Art and Craft, Horse riding, Tennis, Tandem Cycling, Duke of Edinburgh award
  • Offer forums, events and conferences to update parents and professionals on the latest research
