Into the woods, for a fairy-tale evening

Good fairies, and the more mischievous kind, will weave their magic at the Woodland Trust’s Oakfield Glen on the evening of Saturday 17 October (from 6pm to 9pm).

See this enchanting Carrickfergus woodland in a different light: twilight.

Fairy-lights will light the way, while fairy friends – Sylvr and Teal1 – will entertain and keep a watchful eye over woodland visitors.

Gather round the campfire to toast marshmallows; enjoy live fiddle music; and prepare to be transported on magical journeys with renowned storyteller Raquel McKee2.  Little ones will also have the chance to make their own lanterns, from recycled materials.

Michelle McCaughtry, the Woodland Trust’s people engagement officer, said: “Oakfield Glen is the most charming old woodland. It’s well visited by daytime and now, in the run-up to Halloween, we’re inviting families to wrap up warm for a special autumnal evening, brimming with activities.

“We’re keen to encourage children to grow up with a real love of nature.  And we’re using a guaranteed recipe to help us on the way:  with autumn, woodland and fairy tales included in the mix.”

Oakfield Glen is a treasure trove.  A Victorian stone bridge and old ice house offer a glimpse of days gone by.

And the wood is also home to some recent inhabitants.  The mischievous Púca (or fairy-like creatures) will be hiding in the treetops throughout the woodland.  In Irish folklore, the Púca are said to be the most mischievous of all the fairies in Ireland.  Quite unlike our visiting fairy friends, these crafty creations are actually sculptures, made from steel and with input from local primary schools.

This event is free; however booking in advance is essential.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. For further details and to secure your place, please contact Michelle McCaughtry at the Woodland Trust on 0343 770 5750 or [email protected]
