Win for WheelWorks and Divis Youth Project!

The film ‘Being Yourself’, which was created during a WheelWorks Multiple Realities Project, was awarded winner of the Group Film of the Year at The MAC’s Self Made Film Night on October 7th 2014.

Massive congratulations to the young people from the Divis Youth Project at the Frank Gillen Centre Belfast who, along with WheelWorks, were awarded winner of the Group Film of the Year at The MAC’s Self Made Film Night during the MADE Festival, which ran from the 6th to the 12th of October.

‘Being Yourself’ was created during a WheelWorks Multiple Realities Project earlier this year. Working closely with the Belfast based youth arts charity WheelWorks, the young people from the Divis Youth Project at the Frank Gillen Centre Belfast took part in three WheelWorks diversity training workshops exploring cultural diversity before embarking on six film and drama workshops. The project creatively explored young people’s ideas around cultural diversity and inclusion whilst developing their film production and drama skills.

Councillor Deirdre Hargey, who chairs Belfast City Council’s Development Committee, congratulated everyone involved in the production saying: “It is very satisfying to see a project supported by the council succeeding in what I am sure was a very competitive field. Congratulations to all those involved particularly the young people and WheelWorks for a very heartfelt and thought provoking film.” Angela Warren from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland also offered her compliments saying “Congratulations to Wheelworks and the Divis Youth Project on their achievement of the Group Film Award.  We support and encourage creativity in young people and Wheelwork’s Multiple Realities Programme offers opportunities to young people to access a diverse range of quality arts activities in their community, helping to develop skills, confidence and cultural awareness.”

Both WheelWorks and Divis Youth Project were delighted with the announcement and received the award after their film ‘Being Yourself’ was screened to a full capacity crowd in The MAC’s ‘Downstairs at The MAC’.
