'Well Aware' free programme

Since June 2013 Cancer Focus Northern Ireland’s Well Aware programme has been out on the road delivering cancer awareness sessions and free health checks in venues across Northern Ireland.

Over 1200 men and women have attended these sessions with over 1000 receiving free health checks. The sessions have taken place in a range of settings, e.g. supported living schemes, church groups, retirement groups, art groups, knitting groups and various community groups.

The Well Aware information sessions aim to spread awareness of the important issues, surrounding cancer, predominantly how to reduce one’s risk of cancer, and also how to recognise the early warning signs to facilitate early detection.

The health checks offered include blood pressure checks, blood glucose testing, weight and height measurements, Body Mass Index analysis, and Carbon Monoxide measurement. These tests are carried out by an experienced nurse who, depending on the results, may recommend that the individual visits their own doctor for a follow up test.

The programme is proving extremely effective to date with 98% participants stating that it increased their awareness of how to reduce the risk of cancer, whilst 97% of attendees have claimed that the programme raised their awareness of the early warning signs of cancer. 94% of participants say that the programme increased their confidence in making an appointment with their doctor.

This programme is free of charge and available to all Over 60s groups across Northern Ireland.
