Watch butterflies flutter by at Canal Wood

Saturday 26 July, 10am to 1pm

Nature lovers are invited to feast their eyes upon the seasonal beauties of Canal Wood, near Poyntzpass in County Armagh.

Join the Woodland Trust for a breath of fresh air in the most tranquil of settings: this rural wood is right beside the historic Newry Canal.  Take a closer look at the wood’s beautiful butterflies and learn some easy identification tips.

This is one of a series of summer wildlife events taking place at Canal Wood.  And, thanks to funding of over £40,000 from Biffa Award, this gem is also set for a facelift; with improvements designed to benefit both people and wildlife.

Rosie Irwin, contracts manager with the Woodland Trust, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to discover the wildlife, in particular the variety of dazzling butterflies and damselflies, on a summer’s day at Canal Wood.

“Together with Butterfly Conservation Northern Ireland, we will be sharing some butterfly know-how, including identification tips and a look at their preferred habitats.  We’ll have some light refreshments too.  All free of charge.”

Canal Wood nestles between two well-known neighbours – the historic Newry Canal and the Belfast to Dublin railway line.  Here, over 8 hectares of woodland and wetland provide a perfect haven for wildlife and, for people, an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern-day life.  The Woodland Trust is grateful to members of the Newry-Portadown branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland who help care for this wood and its precious wild inhabitants.

Your findings will go towards the ‘Big Butterfly Count’ – a nationwide survey run by Butterfly Conservation.

Saturday 26 July, from 10am to 1pm, is the date for your diary. Booking in advance is required: to secure your place, please contact Rosie Irwin at the Woodland Trust on 028 9127 5787 or [email protected]  Find out about Canal Wood’s series of summer events at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
