Local entrepreneurs and science enthusiasts Elita Frid and Rose McMurrough saw a gap in the curriculum for teaching primary school children science in a fun and engaging environment. Science Starz became a reality with assistance through the West Belfast Works Programme for Self-Employment.

Science Starz delivers fun, hands-on science experiment workshops to nursery and primary school children, in particular, to areas of social deprivation in order to address educational underachievement.

Elita Frid, Co-Founder commented:

Our aim is to ignite and interest in science from an early age. We work with Nurseries, Primary Schools and Community groups carrying out science workshops with their young people, in a classroom environment or tailored for fun days and youth clubs. The business is growing steadily and we have been contacted for bookings around Belfast and beyond, including Derry, Magherafelt and even Dumfries & Galloway. This has meant we have had to train people to work alongside us in our workshops. The greatest achievement for us, however, is seeing the children’s eyes light up with curiosity and interest and having them tell us they want to be scientists when they grow up.”

Science Starz has quickly gained momentum over the past year from engaging in the West Belfast Works Self Employment Programme funded through the Social Investment Fund (SIF) in partnership with Upper Springfield Development Trust and facilitated through Ortus. The programme allowed 17 participants the chance to develop their business start-up with support from experienced Business Advisors at The Ortus Group. Each participant was provided with in-depth training on areas such as marketing, business skills, legal structure and finance followed by the opportunity to work with the mentors on a one-to-one basis.

Rose McMurrough, Science Starz Co-Founder added:

“Ortus and West Belfast Social Enterprise Hub have given us invaluable support from the very beginning by offering business advice, signposting, training, the use of their premises for our own Science Starz training, and a general sounding board for ideas, while keeping us on the right path throughout this exciting journey. We are so grateful to them for believing in us and helping us get to where we are today.”

Elita continued:
