Reminder Call for females aged 16-25 for Reel Politics Film Project

Entitled ‘Reel Politics’, this innovative film project will take place from 16th-20th February 2015 and the young participants will be tasked with the challenge of creating original short films in just five days, about the benefits of young women in politics.  The result of their work will then be showcased in March 2015 to mark International Women’s Day.

The aim of the film project is to inspire a new generation of young women to step up and become leaders in the most influential arena in the world - the political arena!  Over the week long project, the participants will work as part of a team, alongside Cinemagic filmmakers and members of the Northern Ireland Assembly and Belfast City Council’s Women’s Steering Group.

The young participants will have the opportunity to learn about filmmaking, from script to screen, as well as getting the chance to examine current social issues such as domestic violence against women, social media and employment.

Sean Boyle of Cinemagic said “This is a wonderful opportunity for young females who are interested in developing filmmaking skills and who also feel passionately about politics. The project will offer a practical film experience as well as a platform for young people’s views to be heard.”

Belfast Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon urged young women to come forward and get involved in the project.

“I am hugely supportive of this initiative and all others which encourage greater female representation in the political arena.  This is a great opportunity and I applaud all those involved in helping with its development,” she said.

The Principal Deputy Speaker, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, Northern Ireland Assembly said: “It is very important that the Assembly should be representative of the community it serves but we clearly have much more work to do on that. Therefore, I am very pleased to support this project and encourage young women to get involved in the political life of their community. Not only will this project help inspire young women to make a difference, it will also give them very real skills that can be applied to their future careers.

At the Assembly, we believe that it is vitally important that all our young people have the opportunity to take part in political and civic life, it is only then that their views may be truly reflected. This innovative project will make a real impact on those young women taking part and we are looking forward to both supporting those involved and showcasing the films.”
